Braintree Launches Sidewalk Scanning Technology

Braintree, MA – Mayor Joseph C. Sullivan announced today that the Town of Braintree has begun assessing their 200 plus miles of sidewalk using a high tech pavement management company, StreetScan. Using their patented sensing technology, StreetScan’s data collection consists of multiple sensors that record three modalities of acoustic, optical, and electromagnetic waves and can scan more than 100 miles a day.

In developing the Town’s American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) Self-Assessment and Transition Plan, this is the final component of the assessment of our Town property to partially fulfill the requirements set forth in Title II of the ADA act. “The data collected will allow us to prioritize and develop plans for sidewalk improvements in addition to the 100 Roads Program which addresses barrier removal and sidewalk condition as streets are reconstructed,” said Kristen Zechello, ADA Coordinator for the Town. The 100 roads program is currently in its 10th year of deployment and has improved several hundreds of miles of roadways and sidewalks within the Town.

Sidewalks and curb ramps will be assessed for several components to determine compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act standards as well as MA Architectural Access Regulations (521 CMR).  Sidewalks will be assessed for width and cross-slope, and curb ramps for location, ramp, flare and road slope and cross-slope, width, landing area and presence of tactile pads.

The scanning process is expected to be completed by the end of August 2018. After which the data will be made available to the Town for assessment.

For more information on this initiative, or to learn more about our efforts to improve access with the Town, please contact Kristen Zechello, ADA Coordinator at 781-794-8327
