Braintree Files Appeal Of State Decision On Proposed Compressor Station

Mayor Joseph C. Sullivan has announced that the Town of Braintree has officially appealed the decision of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) to grant an air quality permit for the construction of a Natural Gas Compressor Station in the Fore River Basin.  The appeal was hand delivered to MassDEP’s Boston office on the afternoon of Friday, February 1st by Assistant Town Solicitor John Goldrosen on behalf of the town.

“The proposed placement of this gas compressor station in the Fore River Basin presents a multitude of challenges and potential dangers to the Town of Braintree and surrounding communities,” said Sullivan.  “We have reviewed the state’s justification for the approval of this air quality permit and believe they have erred in their judgments as we continue to have serious concerns about the rationale used in the granting of permission.”

The Mayor has been in frequent communication on this matter with Congressman Stephen Lynch, Mayor Thomas Koch of Quincy, Mayor Robert Hedlund of Weymouth, and the residents of Braintree, in particular, the East Braintree Civic Association, who have all indicated their commitment to opposing the station.
