Flood Hazard Mitigation

Flooding can occur anywhere, but some areas are particularly vulnerable to severe flooding. To help communities assess their risk, Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) have been developed. These maps categorize areas into high-risk, moderate-to-low-risk, and undetermined-risk zones.

High-risk areas, also known as Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs), have a 1% annual chance of flooding and are designated on flood maps with zone labels such as A, AE, or V.
